CGPA To GPA

Percentage to CGPA Converter: Why 85% Is 8.95, Not 8.5

Last updated October 2026

Most people who search for this already know their percentage. What they want is the number a form is asking for: a CGPA on the 10-point scale. The catch is that there are two common ways to get there, and they give different answers for the same score. An 85% becomes 8.95 one way and 8.5 the other.

The converter below does both. Below it you’ll find the formulas, a ready table and a short note on which one to use.

Percentage to CGPA Converter

CGPA (10-point scale):

Under the 9.5 method, anything at or above 95% works out to the maximum CGPA of 10.

Estimate only. Many universities publish their own conversion rule, so check yours before using the figure on an official form.

Use the converter above, or read on to see how the numbers are worked out.

The Percentage to CGPA Formula

The formula most Indian students meet is the reverse of the CBSE method. CBSE multiplies CGPA by 9.5 to estimate a percentage, so going the other way you divide by 9.5:

CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5

For 85%: 85 ÷ 9.5 = 8.95 CGPA.

Some universities and employers skip the 9.5 and use a plain proportion, because 10 points out of 10 should match 100 out of 100:

CGPA = Percentage ÷ 10

For 85%: 85 ÷ 10 = 8.5 CGPA.

Neither one is wrong. They come from different starting points. The 9.5 figure was worked out by CBSE from how real marks and grades lined up, while dividing by 10 simply treats the two scales as proportional. If you are reversing a CBSE or UGC style conversion, use 9.5. If your university says nothing about 9.5, the direct method is the safer guess, but check first.

If you need the opposite direction, from CGPA to percentage, our CGPA to Percentage formulas guide covers the CBSE and UGC methods in detail.

Percentage to CGPA Table

Here are the common scores worked out both ways, rounded to two decimals:

PercentageCGPA (÷ 9.5)CGPA (÷ 10)
50%5.265.00
55%5.795.50
60%6.326.00
65%6.846.50
70%7.377.00
75%7.897.50
78%8.217.80
80%8.428.00
82%8.638.20
85%8.958.50
88%9.268.80
90%9.479.00
92%9.689.20
95%10.009.50

Notice how the gap between the two columns grows as the percentage goes up. At 50% the difference is about a quarter of a point. At 90% it is almost half a point, which can matter when a scholarship or job form has a cut-off like 9.0.

Why 95% Already Counts as a Perfect 10

Under the 9.5 method, 95 ÷ 9.5 is exactly 10. That means any percentage from 95% up gives the maximum CGPA, and there is no way to show a 97% or 99% as anything higher than 10. This surprises a lot of students, but it follows directly from the formula. The converter above caps the result at 10 and tells you when this happens.

The direct method doesn’t have this ceiling problem. A 97% simply becomes 9.7.

Worked Examples

A CBSE Class 12 student with 78%. The form asks for CGPA and mentions CBSE, so use 9.5: 78 ÷ 9.5 = 8.21.

A university applicant with 82% from a board that uses plain percentages. The university’s admission page says to divide by 10: 82 ÷ 10 = 8.2.

A student with 96%. Using 9.5, the result is above 10, so it is capped at 10.0. Using the direct method it is 9.6.

When to Use Which Formula

A few practical rules help:

  • If the form or the university mentions CBSE, UGC or the 9.5 factor, divide by 9.5.
  • If the university publishes its own rule, follow that rule even if it differs from both methods here.
  • If nothing is said, write the result of the direct method and keep your original percentage on the form as well, if there is space. An evaluator can always check the raw percentage.

For anything that gets formally verified, such as a visa file or a foreign university application, treat any conversion as an estimate. Many institutions convert grades themselves rather than trusting the number you work out yourself.

What About CGPA Out of 4?

Some searches ask for “percentage to CGPA out of 4”. That is really a 4.0 GPA scale, which works differently from the 10-point CGPA. Our Percentage to GPA on a 4.0 scale guide covers that conversion. And if you already have a 10-point CGPA and need a US-style GPA, the CGPA to GPA converter on our homepage does that in one step.
