CGPA To GPA

Marks to Percentage Converter for Indian Students: Out of 500, 600 or Any Total

Last updated October 2026

Your marksheet shows marks for every subject, but the form in front of you asks for one number: your percentage. It is a simple calculation, but small slips are common, especially when you have five or six subjects, decimal marks, or a total that is not 500. This page does the arithmetic for you and shows exactly how it is done, so you can check it yourself.

Marks to Percentage Converter

Enter your marks subject by subject, or use a single total. Works for any total, such as 500 or 600.

Try it with your own marks above, or read on for the formula and worked examples.

The Marks to Percentage Formula

The formula is the same for every board and every total:

Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained ÷ Total Maximum Marks) × 100

Add up the marks you obtained in all subjects, add up the maximum marks of those same subjects, divide the first by the second, and multiply by 100.

Worked Example: Five Subjects, Out of 500

SubjectMarks ObtainedMaximum Marks
English78100
Hindi85100
Mathematics92100
Science88100
Social Science81100
Total424500

Percentage = (424 ÷ 500) × 100 = 84.8%

Worked Example: Six Subjects, Out of 600

Add a sixth subject with 90 marks and the totals become 514 out of 600:

Percentage = (514 ÷ 600) × 100 = 85.67%

Notice that the percentage moved even though all six subjects were strong. That is why the total you divide by matters, and why it helps to decide first which subjects count (see the questions below).

If Your Result Shows a CGPA Instead of Marks

Some results are reported as a CGPA on a 10-point scale rather than marks. In that case the conversion works in the other direction. CBSE publishes a multiplier of 9.5 for this, which means a CGPA of 8.4 is about 79.8%. Our CGPA to Percentage guide explains this formula and its variants in detail. If you only have a CGPA and need to know roughly how many marks that represents, our GPA to Marks guide covers that.

The converter above also shows an approximate CGPA and an approximate 4.0-scale GPA for your percentage. Treat those two as estimates. If you need a more careful conversion for an application abroad, use our CGPA to GPA converter and read the Percentage to GPA guide before you submit anything.

Things to Check Before You Rely on the Number

  • Which subjects count. Some boards and many admission forms count only certain subjects, or treat an additional or optional subject differently. Check the rule for the specific form or institution rather than assuming all subjects count.
  • Rounding. This converter shows two decimal places. A marksheet, university or employer may round to a whole number or one decimal, so a small difference is normal.
  • Official figures win. For admissions, scholarships and job applications, the percentage printed by your board or issued by your institution is the official one. Use this page to check your own work and plan, not to replace that document.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate percentage from marks?

Divide your total marks obtained by the total maximum marks and multiply by 100. For example, 424 marks out of 500 gives (424 ÷ 500) × 100 = 84.8%.

How do I find percentage out of 500 marks?

Divide your total by 500 and multiply by 100, which is the same as dividing by 5. A total of 425 out of 500 is 85%.

How do I find percentage out of 600 marks?

Divide your total by 600 and multiply by 100. A total of 510 out of 600 is 85%.

Should I include the optional or additional subject?

It depends on the board and on the form or institution asking for your percentage. Some count only the main subjects, and some pick the best subjects. Check that specific rule, and leave the extra subject blank in the converter if it should not be counted.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

For CBSE, multiply the CGPA by 9.5. A CGPA of 8.4 is about 79.8%. Other boards and universities can use a different multiplier, so check your own institution’s rule for anything official.

Will this converter match my university’s calculation?

For a plain total-marks percentage it should match exactly, apart from rounding. If your university uses its own rule, such as best subjects only, its figure can differ.
